Bridget Malcolm, a former Victoria’s Secret model, has disclosed that modelling agencies urged her to “use cocaine and have lots of sex” to lose weight while she was still a minor.
She revealed that these pressures led to severe anxiety, anorexia, PTSD, and other mental health issues.
Bridget Malcolm recently shared her experiences of being encouraged by her modelling agencies to lose weight when she was underage.
She explained that she has spent recent years recovering from these experiences and is finally feeling happy, balanced, and strong enough to speak out. “I feel the best I’ve ever felt.”
“By the age of 18, I had lived in three different countries alone. I had travelled to every continent except Antarctica. I was groomed by a much older man and sexually assaulted multiple times. My agent told me to use cocaine to lose weight, and I was under constant pressure from my agencies to lose weight,” Malcolm recounted.
Later in the video, the model added that her agencies also told her “to just have lots of sex to lose weight.” She noted that she was underage during all these experiences and was struggling with her gender identity at the time.
Malcolm disclosed that she subsequently developed PTSD, anorexia, orthorexia, anxiety, and depression, and eventually “couldn’t socialise without drinking.” She mentioned developing a significant reliance on Xanax and Ambien at one point.
In her video, Malcolm also shared that after experiencing a “nervous breakdown” on her 26th birthday, she was unable to leave her home for a year without facing “severe anxiety” and panic attacks.
“I also had bouts of suicidal ideation, which were terrifying, and that was four years ago,” she said.
Bridget Malcolm Speaks Out After Overcoming Trauma and Eating Disorders
Bridget Malcolm, now over two years sober and four years into recovery from her eating disorders, has found the courage to share her experiences in the fashion industry.
“I couldn’t talk about my experiences before reaching this point because I would have intense PTSD flashbacks and panic attacks,” she explained. “But I am OK now, and that’s why I’m speaking out. I am in solid recovery and strong enough for any backlash, and I wasn’t before this.”
Malcolm emphasized that her decision to share her story is driven by her belief that the fashion industry needs significant change.
“I’m one of the lucky models—I was able to have a long career in the fashion industry,” she stated. “But my job should not include abuse, and that is why I’m speaking up now.”
Earlier this month, Malcolm criticised her former employer, Victoria’s Secret, on TikTok.
She revealed that she wore a size 30A bra in the 2016 fashion show, which was too big for her at the time. Now, Malcolm is a “healthy” size 34B.
She also recounted how former Victoria’s Secret chief marketing officer Ed Razek rejected her from the 2017 show, saying her body “did not look good enough.”
Malcolm also condemned the brand’s recent decision to replace its cast of Angels with a diverse group of ambassadors, calling it “performative allyship.”
